Credentials

ICA-certified Advanced CPTED Professional; NSW Safer by Design certified; PhD, FDRS, CMath, MIMA; Member of AIIA; Member of the ICA Policy and Practice committee. ICA MasterClass presenter and a frequent international conference speaker. Author of numerous research papers on CPTED and Cyber-CPTED — a field whose name he coined, describing the growing overlap between physical CPTED and digital/cyber-security risk.

25+ years in CPTED

Director and consultant of Design Out Crime and CPTED Centre (and previously the Design Out Crime Research Centre) for over 20 years, with more than 25 years' professional experience in Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design.

Where it started

Following an earlier career as a professional engineer, Terence trained and worked in Youth and Community Work in the UK, with hard-to-reach youth and disadvantaged communities. That work raised the question that's stayed central ever since: how can environments be redesigned to reduce problems and crime, and equitably improve quality of life? That is one of the core questions of CPTED and its role internationally.

Research & policy

Evidence, not speculation.

Our advice is grounded in ongoing evidence-based research and policy work, including involvement in a large cross-university research project on Indigenous Night Patrols in WA and NSW commissioned by the Federal Attorney-General's Department, the CPTED research underpinning the WA Planning Commission's Planning Access Ways Guidelines, and the current Safer Places By Design CPTED guidelines. This research base is why our training and our design and policy advice stays up to date on CPTED, crime prevention and counter-terrorism — revised continually as the evidence develops.
